No consensus on PG seat-sharing, fees
BANGALORE: A meeting between the managements of private professional colleges and the new Congress government failed to arrive at a consensus on seat-sharing and fee structure for postgraduate courses.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah, who chaired the meeting, said: "We are giving an option to the private colleges to either follow the consensual agreement we have each year or implement the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Determination of Fee) Act, 2006."
The 2006 act was never implemented due to clauses that are not in favour of private managements. For instance, the act prescribes a differential fee structure for each college depending on factors like location of the college, nature of the course and infrastructure. The colleges have been delaying its implementation by reaching a consensus with the government every year.
The private managements have been asking for a fee hike that is reportedly as high as 30%. Siddaramaiah told them he will convene another meeting before taking a final decision. But time is running out. May 31 is the deadline to complete all P-G medical and dental admissions.
Sources said: "With uncertainty over fee and seats, the government has no option but to move the Supreme Court and seek extension for completing admissions.''
COUNSELLING PUT OFF
Following the failure of talks, the PG medical and d- ental counselling scheduled to begin on May 23 has been postponed. The new date of counselling will be published on the RGUHS website, www.rguhspget2013.com, within a day or two.
In a notification on Wednesday, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) asked students to be available for counselling at a short notice. Medical examination of physically handicapped candidates (both medical and dental) will be conducted at RGUHS at 11am on May 24.
