Uncertainty over PG medical counselling procedure

Uncertainty over PG medical counselling procedure

With the Supreme Court allowing the examination authorities to announce the results of the Postgraduate Entrance Tests (PGET) conducted by them, a top-level meeting will be held here on Wednesday to decide on the next move for postgraduate medical admissions.

The meeting will be attended by the Director of Medical Education, Principal Secretary of Higher Education, and senior officials of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

This follows the RGUHS’s decision to publish the answer keys for the PGET held on March 3 on Tuesday. The 10,977 students who wrote the exam have been given two days to file objections. A senior RGUHS official said that the counselling procedure is dependent on the number of objections. If the proportion of objections is high, counselling process will be delayed, the official said. However, there is uncertainty over the counselling process. For, a final verdict on the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is due only in July. The PGET counselling process, which is usually a month-long procedure, would have begun by then.

“We are aiming to begin counselling by May third week. The problem is, if a student who has written the postgraduate NEET (NEET-PG) has scored a higher rank than he has in the PGET, what happens next,” the official explained. However, RGUHS will not wait for the NEET-PG results, the source added. Over 90,000 doctors appeared for the NEET-PG in December last year and have been awaiting the announcement of results since then.
