DMK threatens to drag government to SC over PG medical seat row

The DMK on Thursday threatened the AINRC government with moving the Supreme Court if the government fails to secure 50 per cent of post-graduate medical seats in self-financing institutions under government quota as per the notification issued by Medical Council of India (MCI). Though MCI in its amendment notification on July 21, 2009 has categorically stated that in non-government institutions, 50 per cent of their total seats should be filled by the competent authority notified by the State government (CENTAC)  and the remaining 50 per cent by the management of the institution on the basis of inter-se-academic merit, the management is not following it. On the other hand, the government is silent on this issue, said DMK convener of Puducherry Dr M A S Subramanian.

He condemned both the AINRC  government and the previous Congress government for failing to secure the seats for the medical graduates of Puducherry. Both AINRC and Congress have  rendered injustice to medicos by not securing seats in post-graduate courses under government quota in the self-financing colleges in the Union territory, he said.

Dr Subramanian urged the government to implement the MCI notification. These seats should be allotted on the basis of merit as per the NEET examination or on the basis of the marks secured in the MBBS examination.

If the government fails to secure the seats, the DMK would file a petition in the apex court, seeking directive to the managements and the government to ensure speedy implementation of the quota, he added.

In the seven self-financing colleges, there are a total of 900 seats, of which 450 should be filled up by the CENTAC authority.
